prologue-
That’s how long it took for life to start feeling like
something Doe could actually hold on to.
Not hustle. Not survival. Not borrowed moments between
chaos.
Peace.
The Garoppolo Islands looked like something out of a dream
he never thought he deserved—water so clear it felt fake, skies
stretched wide like God had nothing else to do but show off.
The kind of place where time slowed down and the past didn’t
feel so loud.
For once… Doe wasn’t running.
He stood on the balcony of the villa, one hand wrapped
around a glass he hadn’t touched, the other gripping the railing
like he still needed something solid to ground him. Behind him,
laughter spilled through the open doors—Monty talking loud
like always, Suni correcting him, Tasha’s voice cutting through
both of them like music he’d learned by heart.
That was his world now.He turned slightly, just enough to catch a glimpse of Tasha
inside. Barefoot, glowing, finally at ease in a way he hadn’t seen
before. She wasn’t watching over her shoulder. Wasn’t bracing
for impact. She was living.
And that did something to him.
Because he remembered the promise.
“I’m done with that life, Tash. For real this time.”
Not halfway. Not temporarily.
Done.
He meant it when he said it. Every move he made after the
tour, every deal, every sleepless night building something legit—
it was all for that promise. For her. For them.
For the version of himself he was still trying to become.
But peace has a way of testing you.
His phone buzzed against the glass table behind him.
Once.
Twice.
Doe didn’t move at first. He already knew.
Some things don’t need a name to be recognized.
By the third vibration, he exhaled slowly, turned, and picked
it up. The number wasn’t saved—but it didn’t have to be.
A ghost from a life he buried.
Or everyone thought he did.
He stared at the screen, jaw tightening as the weight of two
worlds pressed in at the same time. Behind him, Tasha laughed
again—loud, free, real.
In his hand… the past waited.
Not asking.
Demanding.
Doe closed his eyes for a second, just one, like maybe he
could freeze time long enough to choose differently.
But life don’t work like that.
When he answered, his voice was low. Controlled.
“Yeah.”The voice on the other end didn’t waste time.
They never did.
What was said didn’t need to be repeated. Didn’t need to be
explained.
Because the moment it ended, everything changed.
Doe lowered the phone slowly, his reflection staring back at
him from the dark screen—half the man he promised to be…
half the man he used to be.
And both had something to lose.
He turned back toward the villa, toward the life he built,
toward the woman who believed in him when he barely
believed in himself.
Then he looked out at the ocean again.
Two loves.
Two worlds.
One mistake could cost him everything.
And the hardest part?
He couldn’t let them touch.not ever
